Mac Pro: Apple Completes Intel Transition in Eight Months
Mac Pro models using Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" processors have now replaced the PowerPC-based Power Mac G5 models. With this release, Apple has completed its transition to Intel processors. Previously released Intel-based models included two notebooks (MacBook and MacBook Pro) and two entry-level desktop products (Mac mini and iMac). Like the Power Mac G5 that it replaces, the Mac Pro uses four CPU cores to achieve maximum performance. Apple's benchmarks show a performance increase that could be as high as 110% over previous Power Mac Quad G5 models depending on how your Mac Pro is configured. The Mac Pro can be equipped with up to 16GB of RAM.According to Philip Schiller, senior vice-president of worldwide product marketing, the Mac Pro will cost less than a comparably configured Dell PC.The Mac Pro is now available for order in the United States.
