About 6 months ago I got a windows 98 SE c/d and installed it on my Sony lap top, running windows 98,it all worked out very well.
For the last few days the lap top has been doing funning things,so I used the [ system recovery CD ] and it worked just fine, now the bad thing,I used the same windows 98 SE c/d to install the 98se,but it won't let me,I get this message [ can not up grade need windows 98 upgrade ?]
What is going on?
I also have a Windows 98 SE c/d but when I try to install it I get a message that says[your system already has a window system installed??
Is there a way to remove my windows 98 and then install the windows 98se c/d?
Thanks.Phillip

Upgrade??

Can you persue a total clean install, as this would be MY first choice. I'll try to think of something else...

But in the mean while.

Phillip, from your post I am not very clear on what your problem is? But as Cyberion says, a clean install would be the best.

If this is not an option, try and clarify your problem.

If you can get the system booted to dos , try deleting win.com from the windows folder , your 98SE cd should then let you re-iinstal over the top
I did this on my system just a few days ago , however it may not solve all the problems you are haveing , but it served my purpose.
Good Luck.

Yes, what Raid762 says works 100%.

Just one trap to look out for. If your previous install was to c:\windows, make sure you install to there again. It will default to c:\windows000 but make sure you change it to c:\windows or else you loose all your programs setups etc.

Er yep , That Is correct Voodoo , I forgot to mention that.
Using this method I managed to repair a system that refused to accept
my video and tv card drivers.
