Here's another little project I'm doing after capturing a bunch of analog home videos to digital and it's all on DVD now. I need to extract a 15 minute segment from one of them, edit it and burn it to some other format.

So far, what I did was

NeroVision Recode 2 to recode that particular section

convert the resulting IFO/VOB files to mpeg2 using DVD2Mpg

import the mpeg 2 file into Pinnacle Studio and drop the scenes I don't want

recode DVD/VCD/avi/mpeg, whatever form you like.

I feel I'm missing an easier way to do this. Anybody had experience with editing from a DVD video disc and reburning? What software did you use? Tips?

I think there is a better way, using the new Roxio EZ Media creator..
Open the DVD builder, and import the avi you want to clip....there is a command in the File menu that lets you burn the saved "clip" directly to the DVD once you have saved it...If you don't want to burn immediately, just save it to a local directory..
It re-encodes it on the fly, so you SAVE a step or 2 in the process, if you are planning on burning directlly after re-encoding

I used to do it the same way you guys are, but this seems to work well.

Good Luck!

Thanks Wase, I'll give that a try.

My latest discovery is TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5. I'm capturing VHS movies to turn in to DVD. I use Pinnacle 9 to do the capture, but found that it did poorly converting the mpg files to DVD format. So I'm encoding the mpg files to DVD format using MPGenc DVD Author. But I'm getting non-standard size, so using Nero Recode2 to re-author the TMPGEnc generated files. Fantastic. I'm doing quite a large number and have the routine pretty much settled and no failures to day after about 15 captures of full lengh movies. Play back quality looks very good.

Thanks wecc. I think I've got my routine down cool now. Programs I think are cool for capturing VHS is Studio 9. Converting mpeg 2 to DVD files: TMPGEnc; Fixing the size: Nero Recode 2. Burning Nero 6+.

Not sure anything else is usefull. I do admire Elby, though. But, man, it sure is hard getting from newbie status to the point where you can produce.
