OK; here is problem...And yes, I have searched and tried suggestions in this Forum...

I have W2K3 Ent Ed, configured as Workstation as per Neowin article (MS Java; DirectX 9.0; etc). I am an Administrator group user. I have SoundBlaster AWE 64 (ISA) soundcard; CT4520. This card works fine on Win2000, WinXP, and Win9x. This soundcard is installed in [this] machine which has detachable HDDs with these other O/S's installed. No problems.

...Until I use HDD with W2K3 installed. Now, I go to Services and set Audio to Automatic. All OK. I go to device Manager and install WinNT SB AWE 64 drivers for Audio and Midi (because that is what Hardware manager selects). All OK. I go to DirectX, it won't let me adjust any Music properties, because it says no drivers installed. But it does let me Enable all three DirectX settings.

...And of course, there is still no sound at all...

Now, I have *no* yellow "!" in Device Manager; Windows Audio Services is Auto & Started; latest DirectX Diag says all is good; still no sound.

...Switch to WinXP/Win2000/Win9x HDD, sound is fine.

I would please welcome any ideas.

Thank you for listening!

By what you have mentioned there you have tried every step that I could up with. I would try to list what you haven't mentioned above.

1. When you play a wma in media player, does it say "No Audio Device Detected"?
2. Is the sound muted? Check the volume control.
3. In Services > Windows Audio > Automatic is not enough. After you choose Automatic you have to apply and click Start. Then a progress bar displays and it says Enabled.

Just consider the above stuff as a checklist. I know you are not a n00b.
Good Luck mate!

...Are we not all n00bs with W2K3???... :P

I have tried both Win9x and WinNT drivers from Creative CD (old), but now I am wondering if W2K3 supports ISA devices at all???

Is anyone using ISA modem or soundcard with W2K3???

It was my opinion that anyone running a server would not bother with expensive soundcard (or motherboard either, for that matter), so any Server should handle low-end soundcards...
