@Cyberion. That's French for union. What Alpine is saying is that Walmart makes it's profit by leaning on its employees and its suppliers. They sell at agressive prices, but can't fail because the employees and suppliers picke up the difference.

My daughter married a loser guy from Ottawa and he got a job in Dallas. Soon he was laid off (3 years ago), so my daughter is now an "assistant manager" at Walmart. She works 60 hour weeks for a 48 hour pay. No overtime. It's that or out the door.

I think it isn't terribly significant in a large city, but Walmart has destroyed middle America. Small businesses fold all the time now and the employees go to Walmart, the only game in town.

I've always been against unions, coming from CA. But now that I'm older and got more sense, I understand why the Industrial Revolution engendered unions. Walmart and global marketing is a plague and it's our kids who will pay the price, not us.

KC, you captured the essence of WalMart, now the largest retalier in the world. I have never been in a Walmart, largelye because in Toronto they are in the suburbs and I live in town, but as you saw, my daughter is a slave in Dallas Texas, paying my deadbeat son-in-law's lunch every day. I often visit an uncle in WV who lived in Buckhannon for years, a university town 20 miles from Weston, a former couny seat. Walmart set up a store midway between the two towns and they died--both of them. I have a cousin who is a lawyer who is retained by Walmart and he constantly lobbied for Walmart and won. Now he's buying up the destitute town property in Weston and turning it into "funland" Sunday collectable sales, cheap places to eat, etc. He tells my uncle and me that he and I have to "get with it". I dont' agree that we have to "get" with anything. I regret that fundamental values seem to be ebbing from the scene.

@rikytik - Thanks for you comments. My wife worked for WalMart for a short time (8 months) and know much of what happens behind Walmart doors. I'm sure your daughter has told you much.

Just ordered a screener kit and hope to get my local to open a showing to the public from the hall.

Federal Immigration Agents Detained 100
Interesting during opening week of the WalMart movie. Didn't WalMart get in trouble with immigration violations before for it's subcontracted cleaning crews, which they also said then that they had no idea of them. BUSTED!

Quote:
By MICHAEL RUBINKAM,
Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 15 minutes ago

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Federal immigration agents detained more than 100 workers at a construction site for a new Wal-Mart distribution center, authorities said.

The workers, who Wal-Mart said were employed by a subcontractor and not by the retailing giant, were detained Thursday on suspected immigration violations

They were being taken to Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers for processing, he said.
More than 50 federal immigration agents, joined by the U.S. Labor Department.
I guess the federal government is chasing WalMart now.

Everybody is chasing Walmart, I think. I sure hope that documentary gives a kick in the can to regulators so they can get past the old buddy network that takes care of its own through D.C. lobby groups. Disgusting is all I can say.

In this last case, it would be typical. Some contractor just to get the job agrees and both parties know where the labor is coming from and for what price. My gosh illegal labor from Mexico has been harvesting vegitables and fruit in the southwest for generations. Nothing new.

True, and if they checked the Hometown Buffet or Old Country Buffet in my area I'm sure they would find many too.

It's sad, we can't keep jobs in the USA and many of them left are low paying due to immigration violations.
