IDE settings

Please could someone suggest the best IDE settings for the following devices:-

IBM 40gig hdd
Liteon 24102B
Pioneer 106S DVD drive

The Settings i am using at the moment are:
Hdd as Primary master
DVD drive as secondary master
CDRW as secondary slave

Would there be a better set up for the devices?

Sounds good to me, thats how i have mine set up. except i have a secondary hdd which is my primary slave.

Looks good as is. That way provides the faster data transfers between the CD drives and the hard disk.

A good rule is to put in separate IDE cables the devices you'll probably use simultaneously.

You may find your CD-RW software complaining if you try to make CD copies on-the-fly, because the data transfer between devices in the same IDE controller can be slow. It depends. Just try [img]smile.gif[/img]

Yep, the above is the best way for doing 1:1 on the fly CD copying.

E.G
primary master: IBM harddrive
primary secondary: DVD-ROM
secondary master: CD-RW

Would it not be better to have the CD Writer on a master IDE?

cdr(w) on master

dvd on slave

"Master" and "Slave" are just names used to distinguish the two devices. There is absolutely no other difference. Just the jumper we use to configure the devices.

A device may work faster if it's left alone in its IDE cable, either as master or slave. It doesn't matter.

"What happens is the slave drive makes a request to the master drive, which checks to see if it is currently communicating with the computer. If the master drive is idle, it tells the slave drive to go ahead. If the master drive is communicating with the computer, it tells the slave drive to wait and then informs it when it is done".
