As of October it will be illegal for most telemarketers to call a number listed on the registry
/me wonders how the "most" part is defined.
If this is anything like we tried here in Minnesota, I would keep your expectations low. We started a no-call list here this spring and it has been only partially effective. Mostly because of the loopholes they put in the law.
These types of calls are exempt from restrictions here:
1. Non-profits
2. Companies whom you have had prior dealings with.
3. Companies calling to sell you stuff, but where the sale is not COMPLETED over the phone.
4. Political organizations (No surprise there)
We saw telemarketing calls drop only moderately. Now we have Qwest "Do not Disturb" on our line from the phone company. Only callers with a special PIN can get through. Costs about 5 bucks/month. Well worth it to eliminate all unwanted calls.
Guess time will tell how this new thing will work.
