Windows Update link in IE6 doesn't work anymore.*

Uhm,

How about http://www.microsoft.com/ie? If the IESetup wizard don't work, use the ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E" as a command to download to full copy and install.

Thanks for the helpful tip... I was able to use belthazor's advice to get the link working again... It may have been a temporary internet file lingering around that threw it off... Not quite sure though... After removing both the cookies and temporary internet files - it started to work again.

I was looking for a way to reinstall IE, but do not need to do this anymore. I will hold on to that tip though, just in case I have the urge to reinstall.

This is the fix for that:

open regedit (from the run command)

Browse to the following keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Help_Menu_URLs]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\InstallInfo\DownloadSiteURL]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\JITInfo\DownloadSiteURL]

Change the value to: http://windowsupdate.com

This is some useful info. I will be sure to look into trying your fix if it does happen again... Allthough, while going through my registy, I did not see a key for Help_Menu_URLs within the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ branch.

Hey belthazor,

I think I found out what was causing this all to happen... I had to look further into the problem because it continued to happen... And every time I would remove the cookies/temporary internet files, it would work again...

So I ended up finding out the problem (I think)... This is what I did to figure it out... I ended up wiping out all temp files and cookies, then open the browser and try out the link - it worked...

Then when opening up MediaPlayer 9.0 and then trying the link again - it went back to not working... I guess there was something within MediaPlayer that was making this all happen... In any case, I reinstalled MediaPlayer 9.0, and so far, it hasn't happened again...

Again, thanks for the initial help because I wouldn't have been able to solve (or at least think I solved) this issue without a place to start...

And of course, there will be another post within this thread by me if what I did does not work... LOL.

This would be a good bug report to send to MS. Maybe there's already something in the db, I haven't looked.

Oh, and don't take this wrong, but hopefully you won't have to post here again.

But if you have to and find out "the answer" I'd like to know myself.

Just Upgraded Media Player 9.0 and it started happening to me also....

I can get thru to Windows Update via...

_http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Did a system restore and all is well....Will wait before I Update Player again!!!!!!!!

Hey Grzyb,

I wish I could do the same - System Restore.... But unfortunately, I lost that restore point!... At least I know that other's are/were experiencing the same issue - that being WMP9. If I do come up with any other info, I'll be sure to let everyone know.

Delete this entire directory: C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate. Then empty your temporary internet files. Restart Internet Explorer. Worked for me after a long struggle!
