Ok, Richardc2000,

Specs on this HD say 5-55C is the operating range. With the case cover on it's running 53-54, so I guess that's all I can do with this case configuration. The input filter is clean and the exhaust fan is clean.

I had a Maxtor fail not long ago that I had in an external usb case with poor ventillation. This hot running Maxtor 250 is new and mabye it just runs hot. But, one thing sure is I'm backing it up, just in case!!!

I still am wondering what those SMBus sensors are that SpeedFan "sees" that show 127C. Maybe it's something that isn't actually implimented or readable by SpeedFan. Or perhaps simply peculiar to this mobo. I've seen a few remote references to this problem, but nothing specific on a couple Googled sites.

I have something running at 127 degree C too
my others are running at 38 and 33 degrees so I figure it is a bug

you could try turning on SMART just in case too

The last time I had a heat prob, my pc would emit a quite, but constant, "Beeeeeep" and shut down after a few minutes. When I rebooted I was told I had a hardware prob but pressed F1 to continue. It would run fine for a day or two then act up again. The reason I ignored this was I had just replaced ALL my fans about 3 months ealier. Also, my case was cool to the touch.

Eventualy I entered my bios and saw the CPU temp highlighted in red and it's fan speed was eratic. Replacing the CPU fan fixed it. I guess you might want to enter your bios to check your *true* temp?

In Speed FAn you can disable those "bogus"?? 127C readings in the setup screen. I just wonder what the heck they represent.

Thanks for the helpful comments, friends, My cpu is ok, and gave it a good shot of "air" to clean the heat sink. It's running at 49C (A pentium 2.8GHz). It's just that durned Maxtor that runs so hot--10 degrees higher than the other HD's. I backed up everything and removed most of the data from it and am thinking of setting it asside for some future pc I might put together with more cooling power. Now I regret selling my Lian-Li case that had 3 cooling fans in it. It had an AMD mobo in it and that did run hotter than pentiums do.
