In my experience, ensure that your amp is at least 100W/channel. I made a foolish mistake and bought a Pioneer 80W amp last year, and it just does not cut it.

Also - Unless you are a complete Audio Freak LOL you can pick up a decent 5.1 amp for about 250-300 CAD. JVC, Pioneer, Kenwood are pretty much identical in quality, but JVC likes to penetrate the market...so you could get alot more for your money with JVC.

Spend as much as you can on the speakers - they are the most important part IMHO JBL and Polk make GREAT speakers for very little money.

trminatr has a very good point. Usually it is the watts you should worry about, not the THD. Most modern speakers/receivers have such a low THD that distortion is virtually undetactable. So I would lean towards 100W+ per channel for the receiver.

for the speakers, I highly recommend you take a look at JBL SCS150SI or NSP1II (but you need to add a subwoofer to that).

well, i after an exhausting amount of research, I decided and bought a Pioneer VSX-D711 receiver off Ebay. VERY good prices there... most better than yahoo shopping. Still figuring out what speakers to go with tho... I was curious what people had anything bad to say about Acoustic Research's HC6 setup? I've read very impressive reviews of these... I had looked into Bose as well, but it seems their quality doesn't match other competition. Ideas, comments?

I didnt like the acoustic research speakers much - they sounded flat to me...

The best thing to do is go into a store, find an amp similar to yours, and then try all different speakers until you find a sound YOU like

I still think JBL are absolutely the best for the minimal amount of money you would have to pay.

ya, ok... that's what everone keeps telling me to do. I have yet to find a decent place that has a big setup of different systems. Best Buy is a good place, but when i went they didn't have any amps. oh well. i'll keep looking.... but i'm off to india for 3 wks on vacation, so i'll resume my research when i return.
