Hi Grzyb, If your ADSL Provider has done their Homework, the speed cap is controlled by them. Most all ADSL modems will actually go 8 MBits down and 640 KBits up. Cable modems have similar or faster speeds, some can go 10 MBits up and down. However, again it depends on what the Provider has done in setting speed caps. Some Cable providers are a bit sloppy/stupid etc. in how they set things up.

Other issues that are more to the point than Speed are what they will allow you to do and how much data you can tranfer per month. Providers also put Caps on Bandwidth usage which can be a real anoyance.

Hey Crowdirt is there a way to test and know if my ISP is using Speed Cap, even though I think that they do have it in place I would still like to confirm it just to see if it is there.

My provider BTOpenworld here in the U.K....is pretty good....

I have never had any problems with running a server, with all the bandwidth "hogging" that entails........

I have never been asked to "limit" download/upload quotas

The friend I mentioned wanted to start his own server, but was prevented so by his ISP, he was on a cable modem

After fruitless searches he came across a guy who showed him how to do it and like I said he is not only now running his server but doubled both his download/upload speeds........

Whilst very happy with the current download/upload speed of ADSL as compared with 56k modems

Like all BetaONE members we are always on the lookout for tweaks etc to improve our lot.........

Hi Folks, could check the specs. on the modem you have. That would tell you what could be done. ADSL also depends on wire length. The longer the wire the slower you will go.

Cable Providers are rather slippery, they worry alot because of the "Sharing Bandwidth" issue that is part of their system. Rather than a separate connection for each user. In each case if they want to "Stream Video" there is a long way to go. That is something like 100 MBytes/hour, or 72 GBytes per Month if you watch all the time.
