Intel said to sample Springdale chipsets this month
Intel is reportedly planning to send out samples of its new-generation, Springdale-core chipsets to motherboard clients this month for product design purposes.
Scheduled to hit the market in the first half of 2003, the Springdale chipsets are Intel?s latest products for its forthcoming Prescott-core Pentium 4 processors.
As for the 845GE, 845PE and 845GV chipsets, probably the last batch of products to be released this year, the chip giant has decided to officially start volume shipments on October 7. Intel began providing the products in small quantities after mid-August.
Though all supporting the 533MHz FSB (front-side bus) speed, the 845GE and 845PE are Intel?s upgraded DDR333-based chipsets, while the 845GV maintains a DDR266 design.
In terms of chipset price, as Intel currently has no specific price-cutting plans other than its regular discount adjustments the status quo looks set to remain.
Meanwhile, to compete with Advanced Micro Devices?s (AMD) K8-core processors, Intel has decided to introduce Hyper-Threading technology, currently adopted only by workstations, into its P4 processors that will run at clock speeds of 3.06GHz and above.
The Hyper-Threading technology, which enables one processor to work as a dual-processor set, requires supporting chipsets and operating systems (usually Windows NT and above) for full performance. Intel?s new DDR333 chipsets, the 845GE and 845PE, can both support the technology.
