Gigabyte UMD device uses Via, 3.5G tech
800 gram X86 machine leapfrogs Intel initiative

VIA SAID it started a strategic alliance with Gigabyte and Chunghwa which will allow ultra mobile devices weighing less than one kilogram to access the universe.

The Gigabyte U60 uses a Via C7-M chip and provides different OSes including Windows XP or different flavours of Microsoft Vista.
The 800 gram device, said Via, bridges the gap between notebooks and mobile phones. The Via chip comes in speeds of 1GHz to 1.5GHz, drawing around 3.5 watts. The U60 comes with a 6.5-inch TFT LCD screen and with an LED backlight. It includes 512MB of DDR2-533, expandable to 768MB and Via VX 700 Unichrome Pro II graphics.
