Apple's battery problem worse than people thought
Software to fix deformed batteries?

MAKER OF ENTS gear Apple is playing down the laptop battery problem on its Macbook and Macbook Pro lines.

Yesterday we reported that Apple has admitted that its batteries had a few minor performance problems. Apparently some of them will not charge properly and all this could be fixed with software. Nothing to see here, move along please.

However not that the news is out, it appears that the battery problem might be just a bit more serious than Apple wanted to tell us.

According to the Times Online, some of the batteries get 'visibly deformed' as a result of swelling.

It is fairly clear that you are not going to fix deformed batteries with software any more than you can cure the Elephant Man with aspirin. It seems that there are several problems wrong with the batteries, some which can be cured with the software and others which are dealt with by sticking the batteries in a skip.

The Macbook was a nice little earner for Apple, which managed to flog 891,000 of the things over the last year. We can understand that it would not want too many of them returned.

More here.
