Aims to end tension in Colombia
TEMPORAL RULER of Microsoft, Sir William Gates III, is setting up computer learning centres for demobbed paramilitaries in Colombia.
Vole is giving more than $1 million to set up nine training centres in some of the most conflictive regions.
The deal was announced after Gates met with President Alvaro Uribe after meeting with the Colombian leader, government ministers, educators and business executives.
The Colombians have signed signed two agreements with Vole, tying them in to Microsoft products, while many countries in the region are promoting Linux.
Currently there is a bit of confusion about where the training centres will open. A spokeVole could only name Valledupar and Cucuta as places were centres would be created.
More than 30,000 right-wing militias fighters have demobbed under a peace pact with the government but authorities have encountered huge difficulties finding them jobs. There is a fear that they are joining illegal armed groups that continue to kill, extort and intimidate. It is hoped that a nice Windows machine will help them find jobs and calm down a bit. More
