Security smugness dissolved
SOON AFTER Apple released patches for multiple exploits within OS X, tales of Mac hacking were heard at the
Black Hat conference in Las Vegas.
A couple of hackers by the names of Jon Ellch and David Maynor showed off a major security flaw in Apple's MacBook's wireless drivers, enabling them to gain control of the machine outright via remote root access. However, they did not disclose specific details on how to invoke the exploit.
The pair also said they had found at least two similar flaws in device drivers for wireless cards running under Windows - but they ultimately decided to run the demo against a Mac due to what Maynor called the "Mac user base aura of smugness on security". We can't argue with that. More
