Sigh
A REALLY really simple hack enables pirates to copy movies at full resolution for future formats just by using the print screen button on a computer keyboard.
The print screen function copies whatever is on the DVD one frame at a time and all a pirate has to do is come up with some basic code to automate the process and all the security functions on the next generation format are toast.
The hack was spotted by the folk at
c't magazine who were using Intervideo's WinDVD, though it's likely that this hack isn't specific to WinDVD.
After
c't rang up Toshiba about its hack, the outfit discovered it has updates planned to disable the screen capture function. It may also update the AACS key in order to force users to either patch their software or be unable to decode the content. There is more, and it is
here.
