It says its verifying users, and it then verifies. then it sits for a while. pops up a window, asks for the computer name, and when i type in the computer name, it says it can't find it. I shared a folder on the hard drive of the host pc, and still no go. help me.

When being asked for computer name, try leave it to blank without entering anything! The Computer name thing is for domain stuffs which is not applicable in Direct Cable Connection.
In Direct Cable Connection, it does not matter for the different speed of your 2 computers. Even though hub/nic are not expensive, I am still using Direct Cable Connection to connect my old laptop (without network adaptor) to my Desktop PC during replying this PM! Lol...
