jes. the laptop also has a printer port (LPT1) so there is no reason for the network card. the reason i'm doing this is to transfer 100's of .txt files over to the laptop. and just under 1000 MIDI files. so they are small, and I got the cable for free so its not such a big deal. But i will have a look at your links and i will let you guys know what happens.

thanx

hi

had the same problem years ago, as i remember it is to do with processor speed.

i was connecting one fast computer and one slow one, it seemed to matter which was host and which was slave

try changing that round on the two computers

Tony: you're right... I tried connecting a P-II 350 MHz to an old 486 and it worked but there was something weird in it ...

MO: are you sure you are using the correct type of LPT cable ?

Check this:

_http://www.hardwarebook.net/cable/index.html

The cable you need for connecting that way is the LapLink/InterLink cable.

To insure better speeds, make sure your LPT ports are set up as EPP ( Bi-Dir )
and that your cable supports all 8 bits at the time..

When being asked for computer name, try leave it to blank without entering anything! The Computer name thing is for domain stuffs which is not applicable in Direct Cable Connection.

In Direct Cable Connection, it does not matter for the different speed of your 2 computers. Even though hub/nic are not expensive, I am still using Direct Cable Connection to connect my old laptop (without network adaptor) to my Desktop PC during replying this PM! Lol...

It's better off to go to the computer show, get 2 used EtherLink cards, for $10 bucks and a small hub for $20 bucks and 2 10- ft of wire for a good $15 bucks and then u are all set. Did u know? U can use 1 modem (56K) or DSL line on one computer and u can connect the other computer with an network line using a proggie called "PPPshar lite" http://www.pppindia.com/intl/pppshar/

This stuff works great! even if have kids playing or doing one PC and u need to get online. Try it! I love it
