Quadro with 1GB of memory to arrive in April
G70 can not do it, Nvidia needs G71 for it
NVIDIA'S workstation unit has realised out that it simply cannot get enough power to put one whole gigabyte of memory on a single graphic card, according to sources. At least it can not do it with a 110 nanometre (nm) based G70 aka NV47 chips.
Nvidia received quite a few orders for these Quadro 1GB SKUs and it has informed its premium customers that it probably cannot ship those cards till April time. A 110 nm based G70 plus one gigabyte of memory on a single PCB needs high voltage so Nvidia is forced to wait for G71 to build such a card. G71 is 90 nanometre based, and it consumes significantly less power than its 110 brother and will make the design easier.
Nvidia will do everything to have these cards out as soon as possible, as it will sell them for close to $8000 per card and the guys who buy such a card really know what are they getting. All this fits with our previous story when we announced that G71 was taped out in first weeks of January and many people know that there are three months from an original tape out to production.
