I personally don't use .wma at all. Mostly for the fact that it's a Microsoft controlled format and it can have security measures built in to keep you from copying to other devices, listening to it multiple times, etc. I also feel that the quality of .wma isn't up to par as an mp3 at 128/160kbit.
There is mp3PRO, which compresses mp3s to an even higher level, but it doesn't seem to be catching on too much. Been out for over a year now I think and it just isn't picking up any steam. Again, from what I've experienced, the sound quality just isn't that great.
One format that seems to be pretty good is the open source format of Ogg Vorbis. I haven't personally used it, but more info on it can be found here:

I personally stick with mp3. I don't really care with compression that much as long as the sound quality is good. Of course, I'm always on a fast pipe, so everyones needs are different.
