SATA is theoretically but not yet actually faster. It coexists happily with PATA (I have 2 PATA and 2 SATA running together). It uses a thinner (7 connectors rather than 40) and potentially longer (up to a metre) cable - easier to route and much less disruptive to airflow through the machine. It's the future.
