Hard Drive Cooler ?

Hello,

Is this a software to make a hard drive more cold ?

I have a maxtor 60 gigs and the temp is 51 degree

I have it for about two months.

This is really hot here today and this morning I have many problems to boot

I have go to the computer shop and the guy said my HD is ok.

I also have buy a mountable rack with a little fan on it.

But I need to know if there are a program to keep the HD more cold

I have never heard of such an util. Wonder how that should work? I have IBM-drives only in my box and they offer a utility:

The IBM Feature Tool allows you to control some of the features in the newer IBM high performance ATA hard disk drives. Version 1.5 adds support for the latest IBM drives. The IBM Feature Tool allows you to:

Enable or disable the read-ahead or write cache.
Change the drive Automatic Acoustic Management settings to the:

Lowest acoustic emanation setting (Quiet Seek Mode), or
Maximum performance level (Normal Seek Mode).

Change the predefined capacity of the drive. This option can be used in situations where there is a BIOS limitation and the drive is not recognized. See the Users Guide for specific details.
Switch the Ultra DMA mode (replaces the IBMATASW utility)
Change Advanced Power Mode - allows you to change between the lowest power consumption and the highest power consumption (maximum performance level).
Show Drive Temperature - shows the current drive temperature in Celsius and Farenheit.

I doubt anyone else offer more utils or possibilities. Do Maxtor have anything at their site? Utils or specifikations?
In general I believe 51 degrees is a little high, but maybe not dangerous high. IBM claims 60 degrees (or around that) to be the limit.
For a comparision my three drives all run between 30 and 33 degrees, placed at the bottom of a Lian-Li case where the air intake flows. A fan or a cooler can't be totally wrong.

ive heard about somthing like that!!!
got to be carefull m8 as any fan give off a magnetic feld to close can start to disrupt the hdds

unless they are the shelded type

use with caution

I have a coolermaster hard drive cooler, the drive fits into this aluminum shell which then goes into a 5 1/4 bay with a fan that blows air through it. Its noisy though, so I have disconnected the fan.

There are other options avalible though.

If you have an Intel chipset try the Intel Application Accellerator, it reduces hard drive noise so it may also help cool it down.

you may get one of those gadgets that displays your system temperature. it may be that your system ventilation is not good enough (which may also cause the temperature to rise).
the temperature gadget should about $20 to $30 bucks

You can buy a Caddy for Harddrive as the other poster stated
They come in 2 flavour the aluminium one which is more expensive and standard plastic one..

both have extractor cooling fans at the back....

just be careful.. some come with ATA100 only..if you have ATA133 ..you may want to shop around!


I have 2 x 80 Gig HD and a 60 Gig .. and ihave 2 of this caddies install and its good when hot summer is round the corner.
