AN international crime ring is recruiting students as "money mules" for an internet banking scam worth millions.
According to Australian The Daily Telegraph Aussie criminals with links to Russian and Malaysian gangsters have set up a network to lure students into accessing money illegally transferred from other people's accounts. At least 61 victims have been identified, the newspaper said.
Some "money mules" were said to have collected up to 100,000 Australian dollars (76,400 US) in a day for the syndicate, getting paid typically between 200 and 500 Australian dollars, which they regarded as easy money. The syndicates use Trojans delivered by spam email or through links on advertising pop-ups, to get people's account details. So far 13 people have already been arrested including four aged 16 or 17 of whom three have admitted their role.
