What is gone? Motherboard< Power Supply, or...???

Today I went to BIOS settings - on my dual 1GHz P3 1GB RDRAM Windows 2000 machine - to check my Cache settings and, like an IDIOT I am, reset

Auto Configure Optimal Settings - to YES, from NO.

After reboot My computer comes back with a Motherboard Supermicro screen on it
with

PRESS TAB or DELETE.

Small problem, it does not do anything from this point on...
Comes back with a black screen and sits there...

Rebooted many times, once somehow got into SCSI Utilities, does not show anything there.

After I press Power ON switch, both hard drives and lights come on.
In five sec, or so, one drive - OS - goes out first, then second - my files - goes out.
So BIOS never procedes to let drives stay on.
Never proceded to OS portion to bootup.

Another reboot, the same.

Called my all-knowledgeable neigbor, computer engineer-genius.
We decided to reset a bios on a motherboard, to flash it out, per manual instructions, no success.
In process of doing this, my Power supply stops working.
Cannot start from the switch in a back or by pressing a front button.

Checked everything possible.
Removed video card, no change.
Decided to stop here without taking out, as manual says, SCSI card, RAM, etc. for now...

Tomorrow ordering new Power Supply.

Read a manual, went to Supermicro site, useless, of course.
Searched thru Copernic, nothing mentioned...

Any guesses, what did I kill?

I've experience one situation to enable the Autoconfigure to Optimal Settings it blackouts and doesnt reboot, but once I tried to reset BIOS from the mainboard jumper setting it bootup again.

Tried resetting BIOS on a board,
that's where I first saw a Power Supply problem.
Nothing happened though...

I don't know if this would do anything but did you take out the CMOS battery for a while and put it back in and then try to reset the bios?

will try tomorrow morning, but really looks like a Power Supply needs to be changed.
Ordered a new one.
By Friday, hopefully, will get it and install.

I got me a new pc cause my old one was doing it.

power on, and the HD light goes on. then when BIOS is surposed to be booting, it just hangs. No signal gets sent to my screen. screen just stays black.

my monitor uses its own power supply. ie: direct into wall socket.

Whats going on here?

I was told it could be my hard drive....my mother board....even my supply....

Its not my bios battery as i replaced that. and still same problem.
Why does this happen, and how can it be fixed?

Similar to what I described earlier.

I actually managed somehow (?) to get it back thru BIOS with the help of my MCSE after battery clock replacement and BIOS reset on a MB.

Power supply now looks OK, all fans work.
Replaced a video card.
Reformatted drives, fast and slow, just in case.
Even if a boot sector died it should've worked now, but...

Tried to reinstall 2000 thru two different repair procedures, tried full reinstall,
after first reboot always stops when a W2000 horizontal bar on a bottom of a screen appears.
Both hard drives stop blinking, no signs of life.

Went to BIOS and reset again to OPTIMAL SETTINGS, and now again died.
Sent a nasty email to Sutermicro,
No response yet.
Was told by my techs to take out and reset RDRAM, put 4 sticks in different slots, just getting again Supermicro screen with TAB or DELETE, which again comeback with black screen "forever".

I have had this happen to me with a couple of systems I put together, one Intel and one Athlon based. Lights come on, fans are all spinning, monitor is powered up but only a black screen, no boot. In both cases, the motherboard was defective: replacement with a new board (same model) was the solution. Clearing the CMOS, etc. had no effect.

These were newly-built systems, though, never booted up before. Not quite what felixml is talking about, unless the motherboard just happened to fail at the same time.

Hiya

Redkitty thats exactly whats happening to my machine, i built a P4 1.7 about 3 months ago for wife, she was having probs OS so reformated the HD, inserted bootable XP started to install than recieved an error.. rebooted now just black screen.... the thing is that this board has dual bios and wouldn't expect both to crap out... do you think i need a board replacement?

another thing is in bios setup ..the boot up sequence was changed to 1 boot cd 2 boot HD .. and i dont think boot from floppy was checked ..silly i no... and with out a screen i cant change, i looked for jumpers to reset bios but i cant see anything..

the board is Gigabyte dual bios GA-8SDX P4 Titan seires ... any help would be totally appreciated..

OK...
Reset RDRAM. Nothing changed.
Took 2 sticks out.
MB beeped for the first time, like it has some life in it left.
Put all back, no beeps again.
So may be it is partially shot, so it has to go, I guess, just in case.
Plugged in new Power Supply,
exactly like you say , Guys, fans work, HDs blink and then stop.
Never goes beyond Supermicro screen.
Will order a new MB.
Cannot see anything else now.
