XP "strange admin account" in C/P
Hi
I installed XP Home OEM a week ago and, as I was the only "user", XP would boot straight onto the desktop. All was going well until about three days ago when I turned on the pc and Windows stooped at the login screen with me as the only "visible" user on it.
I could not understand this because I like to turn on the pc, go on make a drink or something and when I come back, the pc is ready for me to use. Anyhow, I put up with this for a couple of days and then decided to look in CP/Users and was amazed to see not only my account + the guest account, but also another account which was not created by me.
The account was called (I think), ASP.NET or AST.NET (administrator) and was passworded. I must stress that this account was not created by me. I decided to try and delete it and it worked, but I would like to know how this account suddenly appeared from nowhere and how it could be created without my knowledge or approval?
BTW: I recently installed my HP PSC 1350 software and during installing, was prmpted to install the .NET framework, which I agreed to. Now the ASP.NET or AST.NET suggests that this account may be something do to with .NET.
Is it and why was it automatically created without my approval?
Regards

When I installed my visual studio, it created the same account, I dont think someone hacked in and created it or anything. But I think it would be really nice if asp.net or whatever created it would let the end user know, so it doesn't spark a red flag or what have you.

Hope that helps

All i know is that after I installed VS, i noticed the same user and passworded as administrator. read the above artical and it will tell you how to make it a limited account and not mess up anything with the webserver stuff and all that other stuff

Hi Guys
Thanks to evryone who replied to my post.
Ok, all understood but the URL that PCTech provided (and I did not read it all), tells you how to create an ASP.NET account and that's ok, but the account should not be automatically created without agreement of the user.
As I aready stated, the HP software installed the .NET software because, I suppose, it must require it and, I also checked WinUpdate and downloaded and installed SP1 for .NET.
I've now deleted the ASP.NET passworded account because I was unsure what it was doing there; so, does it matter that I have deleted it and is the account actually required for .NET to perform correctly?
Thanks again to everyone who replied.
Regards

hmmm, if it has been deleted, and if everything works correctly, then I would say dont worry about it! however if it doesn't work then you have a link on how to add the account back as a non-administrator acct, with your own password. just my 2cents, it can't hurt to put it back as a non-admin acct. Now that brings me to a question. Is there a way to "hide" the account from the logon screen? like so windows will assume a certian user always signs on unless, they sign off? just curious, because my windows stops at the logon screen, and I want it to boot into windows without stopping.
Thanks for the help, and glad I could help out!

You can hide any user you wish using Tweak UI. Inlcluding admin.
BTW if you dont use asp.net with IIS then no you dont need the account.
"Account used for running the ASP.NET worker process (aspnet_wp.exe)"

When you install Visual Studio .NET you get this -- that's true.
User Name: ASPNET
Full Name: ASP.NET Machine Account
Description: Account used for running the ASP.NET worker process (aspnet_wp.exe)
But, it is not an Administrator account. It is a Limited User account.
I wonder how it became an Admin Account, Brave01Heart.

Hi
Thanks once again to everyone who has taken the time to reply.
*McoreD*: With reference to the ASP.NET account; I don't have Visual Studio installed and I first noticed the stopping at login after i installed the .NET software. I really don't know how and why it became an Admin Account ..... as the only user, one minute I was able to go straight through to the desktop and the next it I noticed it was stopping at login with just my name there. I thought that this was a bit weird and eventually checked out the User Accounts in C/P, and there it was, the ASP.NET (Admin) passworded account. I had absolutely no part in it, so I'm also puzzled by this. Anyway, I've deleted it and not noticed anything unusual that would require the account .... at least on everything that I need to use daily on the pc.
War59312: I don't use IIS so I guess I won't be needing the account. Thanks.
PC Tech: With reference to hiding any account that you don't nee to use; I guess
War has answered that for both of us and anyone else who might need to know this.
Thanks again for your input.
If it turns out that I do need the ASP.NET account, I'll ask again on this forum and I know I'll be sure to get the answer.
Regards to all
