THE GROWTH OF PCs will slow over the next two years because of a lack of a 'killer ap'.
According to analysts Gartner although PC sales are booming at the moment as companies replace ancient kit, that could all change in a couple of years. It predicts that sales will slow to a trickle because there will be no need for upgrades.

The villain of the piece? Step forward Microsoft for not being fast enough with Longhorn, says Gartner analysts.

Businesses typically replace PCs every four years, usually because they are running Windows operating systems that Microsoft either no longer supports or has said it will drop in the near future.

However, with Microsoft dragging its three toed feet over Longhorn and refusing to liberate the product possibly until 2007, such an upgrade was not needed.

This means that companies will not have to replace kit for ages, unless they catch fire.
