A friend of mine has the Original Installation of Win98 on his PC....

He has bought himself a copy of Win98 SE

I know don't laugh!!!!

I tried to pursuade him to move to WinXP, but he just won't......

When he tried to Upgrade, he realised that the CD he had was for a fresh Install of Windows SE NOT the Upgrade Version!!!

ops:" class="inlineimg" /> ops:" class="inlineimg" />

He want's to know is there any way of using this CD for Upgrading his version of Win98, even though it's a CD used for a fresh install??

I seem to recall, that if you change one of the INI files, you can make it into an Upgrade CD??

Someone correct me if I'm wrong??

Thanks for any help & advice....

Hi there Grzyb.

I might be completely wrong here because it has been a while since I last worked with Win98, but here goes:

Tell him to rename thw win.com file to win.old and then reboot with the 98SE cd and proceed to install SE. It installs over 98 but still keeps all the settings and programs.

There is just one trap to look out for.During install it asks you where to install the files. Make sure it installs in the same directory as the previous install. If you don't all your old stuff is gone.

As I said, I might be wrong here. Is there anyone else that can verify my procedure?

That's a weird situation your friend has.
I have a full win98se myself, but it only wants to do a fresh install when I boot with the cd inserted....if I run the setup from within windows,I have the option to upgrade or to do a fresh install.

What an old prob! I remember this! I also have a full 98SE. There *was* a way to make it update 98 but I can't remember how. I think you had to extract the files to your HD and then run something?

But I tell you what, updating 98 to SE SUX! My boss at the time had an IBM Aptiva with 98. He BOUGHT a Win 98 SE update CD and it just made things worse. I STRONGLY suggest your m8 do a clean install with 98SE. This assumes he has his original apps and can backup any data he needs with a burner. There were still some apps that would work with 98 but not SE. Lotus '97 comes to mind.

Good luck.
