unicorn is on a distinguished road
I haven't seen any 100%-safe ftp-server. Or heard about.

They all seem to have different problems, mostly in the category "server xxx answers strangely at command yyyy". Many of theese are documented and can be read about at security-sites. Others are still to get known to others than those that found them...

If you are going to run a private ftp I think you can use nearly anyone of the servers available. Then try to have a good secure way to logon - if you know your users you should be as safe as possible. A combo of L/P and IP should be pretty safe. Possibly in combination with encrypted transfer?

(Well, there might be more secure solutions than I know of of course, the big pubs out there should be safe, or so I guess.)

What the "best" FTP server SW is, is hard to say. It all depends on your will/ability to learn something and personal preference. Here's a list with info of available FTP server SW: http://serverwatch.internet.com/ftpservers.html

Secure..? As secure as you want. Make log in names & passwords, allow access to those you trust, be sure not to publicly post your ftp addie somewhere on the net... Else your private FTP might turn public...
