Interesting question. I am glad somebody asked it.

Windows XP's default configuration is far from optimized. This guide will help you improve your system performance with the Windows XP operating system. All of the programs listed in this guide can be found on our Support CDs. I avoid using or recommending "all-in-one" Windows XP Tweak programs since many blindly adjust settings that can cause future problems. This guide is designed to be performed top to bottom, in sequence since some steps are required to be performed before others.

Is XP the fastest version of Windows ever? That's debatable, but this is not: like every operating system that came before it, it's not as fast as it could be without a whole bunch of fine-tuning.

Do you work with Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition? Then, whether as a professional or an amateur you will certainly appreciate the Advanced XP Tweak software. Windows gets better with every year but there is always some room for development and improvement.

Whilst there are some tweaks you can try to optimize windows, they mainly reduce the memory usage. Although they might slightly speed up windows by reducing the amound of disk swapping, they are unlikely to make a big difference.

My general advice is to go through the "services" mmc snap-in in XP, and disable anything you do not need. Then look at the "run" entries in hklm\software\ms\win\currentuser and remove any "junk" which runs in the background. This will probably help in reducing the start up time of windows XP, but if you are expecting to make your computer "200% faster" you will be dissapointed. Fine tuning a few settings will not make a 2.4GHz P4 with 512 PC3200 ram act like a 4.8GHz PC with PC6400 RAM

@gicio There may be some registery "hacks" that will appear to make some systems faster although it may be better if we knew the specs of the machine you have.
The above post should be read very carefully and completely and not to take a quick look for a "fix". If you are having problems with certain areas then that should be addressed first.

The site below will have lots of information as too what services can safely be disabled or not depending on the use of the machine

/http://blackviper.com or do a google search for Blackviper

Welcome to BetaOne.

Thanks
Dudelive

ps: Before you even think about tweaking the registery be sure to have a backup.
It is real easy for it to get in worse shape than before you started.
