How to delete .AVI files in XP

You know when you've got loadsa .AVI files on your system and you try to delete them but the system tells you basically to sod off 'cos someone else or another program is using it.....

Well, here's the solution:

Delete the following from your registry:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

Please do not hold me responsible for f'ing up your system, make a backup or something if you don't know what you're doing

Thanks for the tip Jakesnake... I have always had the same problem when moving/deleting/renaming files in Windows 2003 server. Sometimes it would work, other times it refused and I had to close all explorer windows and do what I wanted from the command line. Deleting that registry key fixed everything.

Note: Deleting the key has the side effect that windows will no longer retrieve metadata for media files. This means things like duration, length, artist, etc will not show up in the "detailed view" or in property pages.

I use this free tool called "move on boot".
It adds a right click option to delete or move a file on the next boot. It makes the change before windows loads all the way and interfers with the file.

If you want to try it you can get it here:

On the left side click "file utilities" the scroll down to the bottom where it says "Old Version (Freeware)" GiPo@MoveOnBoot 1.9.5
