I had this same problem. Almost excatly like you stated Sephiroth.

But guess what I tried three different good power supplys and no luck. Guess what it was. The hard drive was faqqed some how. And yes it worked fine with another two computers. My brothers and an old pos I still have down stairs.

It did the same thing as yours is doing in setup and computer turning off. Still don't know why. But how did I fix you ask?

Well I wrote zeros to the entire drive and then it worked fine. lol Dont know why. And its still works fine right this sec. with the same computer and hardware.

But anyways my first guess for you too is the power supply. Thats always my first guess and so far it has been three out of four times. poopie, make that four out of five times. Forgot about my brother who had it happen to him a few months ago.

Oh and btw I ran dios on the hard drive and memory as well and no reported errors so, I dont always trust them. But normally they are correct. :P

So if you dont have an extra power supply just run down to a local computer shop and they should let you try another one, if their nice like me.

well, i somewhat fixed it for the time being until we've got the cash to buy a new power supply, still recovering from christmas among other things, lol, the mobo has a jumper to make the fsb run at 100mhz instead of 133/166.... i set the jumper to 100 and it's running fine now, go figure, maybe the power supply doesn't have enough juice to run the athlon as a 2500+, but it's just stable enough to do it as a 1600+? oh well, at least it's working for the time being till i can get a psu in a few weeks

Dont skimp on a PSU mate. Stay away frm a brand called Q-Tec as well. Try for at least a 350W PSU when you do get one.

Hope things are getting better for you mate.

Glad you've got it going but, although I'm convinced (at very long range!!) that it's the PSU, I don't think I'd buy another until I'd confirmed the first one had snuffed it. Is there no possibility of a swap anywhere?

@war59312 Yep, mine is a 550 TruePower running 4 HDs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, CD-RW, 4x80mm case fans and 1x120mm on the water radiator. My old Enermax surrendered; now my voltages are so stable that it was a great relief the other day to see my +5v rail go to 5.016 - it's so predictably at 4.999 that I was worried the software had locked!

My 430 does just fine. That and I got it at half the price cause they like me. That and its a better model. They upded the voltages and added another year of warnenety for free. And a new better looking box (haha) and quieter fans. Man they are quiet as hell. Cant even tell if they are running by listening to them.

Well real reason is because the first one went out on me and got a refund. But they really wanted me to buy something so they gave me a great deal. Newegg that is. That and I've spent over $1500 with them over the last year, which is a lot for me seeing as I dont even have a job. They are deffinently the best in my book.

Are you sure the RAM is compatible?? Let me explain. My mate has an MSI K7N2 Delta Nvidia Nforce 2 board and had the same problems at first with the computer shutting down. It turned out that the board was finicky about the speed of FSB RAM you use. This sounds *possibly* suspect since you said that turning down the FSB temporarily cured the problem. I don't know enough about the situation with my mate's computer to tell that it actually is possibly the problem with yours.

Let me talk to him and see what the deal was with his again and I will let you know.

"RAM - wrong RAM can cause instability. "Wrong" can actually be "too fast". Kingston DDR-333 and DDR-400 is reported to work well. I have Geil, and may have stability issues because of that"
Also this may sound weird, but make sure you have the stock cooler on correctly. He had his on backwards once and the heat safety kicked in and kept the thing from burning up. He still has heat problems with the stock cooler. Also, if I recall, a firmware update helped with some stability issues if they have not been done yet.

I hope this helps.

To me from personal experiance in pc repairs it definately sounds like a power supply problems. For a P4 and athlons it recommended with athleast 300 watts power supply. Power supply are also design to Shut itself down when the load is to large on them to prevent damage to pc.

Check out this site:http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/power.htm

Its an osome resource site for pc repair

I hope this helps!!
