I am trying out an ftp setup behind a router and was not allowing passive mode. Does that provide problems for ftp clients to stay connected?

What is the reason to use Passive Mode (PASV) ? I've read about it in the faq's around and in this forum, but I still haven't understood clearly the need for this mode.

Is it true that it is less secure that disallowing it?

I'm chocked.
You didn't find it at:

http://www.betaone.net/forums/index.php?s=...=18&t=6658&st=0

Or if your question isn't covered there, could you please be a little more specifik?

Edit: Link updated as we have changed board.

Don't know how I missed your 3 part series, unicorn. It's really excellent. Just printed it and am hard at work digesting.

I guess my question was more like this: Why would anyone not enable PASV?

My trouble/confusion stems from setting up my ftp behind a router which seems to require specifically "forwarding" the desired port range above 1024 as well as setting the ip to listen to in the server. Min is dynamic, so........ Now looking at dns2go, as well.

Sorry to choke you like that.

......meanwhile.......
Just read about ports/PASV in your thesis. Proceeding to do some fine tuning of my Serve-U server. This is really a fine faq you wrote

kind regards, rikytik

.unicorn, Think I got it configured. Testing from another isp now. Your guide is most helpful. Downloaded guildftpd and will try that out. Looks interesting. For now using Serve-U 4 because I am familiar with the setup.

thanks again.

hey dude I would recommend using FlashFXP it supports IPMasq/NAT/Non-Routable IP test connecting to your server also what are you useing BulletProof FTP or Serv-U, when you enable passive on BulletProof you need to specify the port range for Eax: 20 to 21 I dont know about Serv-U ask one the other guyz here they might know
