How To Set Up XP Firewall and still run an FTP Server
ok 1st why , well the XP wall is a top class firewall that runs in near stealth mode (port scans return no message to the scanner) this is
realy the best you can hope for, and for most of us who want to run a FTP server in the past the advice has always been to disable the XP
wall and install some 3rd partywall that probly is not as good (IMO). well there is a way to setup the XP wall and it is very easy to do.
1.click start / settings / control panel / internet connection
2.find the Dial up connection and right click it
3.select Propities form the menu
4.select the Advance Tab from top area
5.and make sure Protect My Computer...... is ticked
6.on the same Tab screen look at bottom and click Settings
7.on this screen you will see many unticked boxes these are preset port options you can make the XP wall use (allow the port to be opened) you will see one marked FTP. this pre set FTP port is on port 21 the standard one for FTP ports. but many ISP frown on you using there bandwidth to serve up files on your FTP and they do regular port scans to see if you are, For the most part ISP's scan the normal default ports and some slightly higher ones, If there realy bothered .
well if you want to click this and run on port 21 it will allow you to set up an FTP and serve (not a good idea ok). a much better way is to add a new port , this port can have any number you want in upto 65536 the higher the port number the less chance your ISP will cotton on.
A really super port number is 1214 (why?) because most peer 2 peer apps like Morpheous / kazza use this port to share on and as kazza is
legal the ISP would just assume your another kazza user and the bandwidth usage is not noticable.(not all use this port) but internet
boffins i have read say its a safe bet to use ok.
8.How to add a port this is very easy to do follow on.(we should still
be on step 7 screen) look at the lower part and click the button ADD
9.In the Description put in MY FTP (or what ever you want to call it)
10.In the Name or IP.... enter 127.0.0.1 (this is localhost)
11. in both the External port and Internal port enter 1214 or your choice
of port number upto 65536.
Click ok and close all the screens
if you are connected to the net you will have to dis-connect and re-connect to activate the new port settings.
Now go setup your ftp server and in the port number just enter the one that you just setup in the XPwall .
If all went well you should now be able to run an FTP and share your stuff .

THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH A ROUTER OK!
For IRC and DCC ports
on the same lines you can also add ports for IRC and DCC bot downloads use the above guide and add these ports
1st add IRC and use port no 6667 to allow IRC to work
2nd add Identd on port 113 this allows identd to work
2nd add DCC1 and set port to 5000
3rd add DCC2 and set port to 5001
this is normaly enough but if you want more ports
continue to add them you wont need more than 10 max
then in you irc client im using Mirc goto the File / options and find the DCC options tab and set the DCC ports first and last to the ports you created IE: first port 5000 last port 5001 .
now you are ready to go download some serious shit from IRC
for those new to this may recomend the following.
connect to irc.insiderz.net and join channel #elite
once in there you will see lots of message scrolling up the screen

yer it looks complicated but it aint realy
re look at the above and you can see the bot is offering 3 files each of these can be requested by you by typing into the channel
/msg [EWG]-[333] xdcc send #1
/msg [EWG]-[333] xdcc send #2
/msg [EWG]-[333] xdcc send #3
if there is a que the bot will tell you what position in the que you are be cool the dload will start as soon as its your turn . If your real lucky and there is no que the bot will send a popup box for you to confirm you want the file its sending (can be set to auto accept in Mirc) just click OK and the file will be transfered to your PC . remmebr this is a multi part games you will need all 3 files to enjoy it . small point but important you must leave your Mirc connected to the channel you are leeching from or no game for you .
or for the realy realy lazy leecher go grab bottler its a DCC auto downloading app . basicly it will connect to an IRC network join every channel it can find and then ask if there are any DCC bots serving in the channel if there are bots it then gets a list of all the files they have on offer and neatly presents them to you all sorted in nice colums to dload the file simply double click it, the app takes care of the rest it will auto que and start the transfers it will auto resume if your connection gets cut off , but realy this is for the compleat novice and us Leet types would never touch it hehehe .. the point is there are 100s of ways to get files games movies the problem with being new to this "is were do i look" , you found your way to the best forum on the net so you cant be 2 dumb , now go find some files and get it shared ,, good luck ..
