If this is in the wrong forum, could a mod move it to the right place please.

My mate is about to buy a 2mbyte broadband line, he was offering to share it, he lives about 0.5-0.6 miles away from me, I was wondering if its possible to have a wireless cpnnection with that distance and if so could someone help me out on what I need and may be a average cost of this please. I hope thats enough information for you guys to understand if not please say so.

TIA

Out of the box wi-fi has a theroretical maximum distance of 330m (approx 0.25 miles) in perfect conditions, with no walls in between and a clear line of site, and the lowest speed.

Longer distances can be acheived with good directional antennas, but these all require a line of sight. Knowing the distance is not enough, what you can acheive depends on many factors (any trees/buildings in the way?).

There have been cases of hobbyists acheiving an 11 mbps link over 5 miles using custom antennas made from pringles cans. These however had the benefit of being installed on mountaintops, and with no obstructions between the two nodes.
