Microsoft is reinventing the mouse wheel, adding "Tilt Wheel Technology" for horizontal scrolling and smoothing the vertical scroll motion. The tilting wheel lets users scroll left and right as well as up and down without having to use the on-screen navigation bars. This can be handy when working on a large spreadsheet or trying to view an unwieldy Web site, Microsoft says in a description of its technology.

New Mice Due

Microsoft plans to release on September 3 three new mice that implement the new tilting wheel, a company spokesperson says. One will be a corded mouse and two cordless, operating at 27MHz, the spokesperson adds. The mice will also have a feature that lets users toggle between open applications on a PC by pressing down on the wheel, she says.

Me likes. Want a cordless one. But

"With Microsoft's new wheel, users experience no clicks when scrolling up and down."

I guess nothin can be perfect. Or is this maybe better?

Sounds good. I've been using the Gyration cordless mouse. Swank! Use your mouse in mid-air, like a laser pointer

"Sit back and relax! Gyration?s patented motion-sensing technology allows you to mouse around using natural hand movements. Alternate between desktop and in-air use to reduce fatigue and discomfort associated with repetitive motion. It?s great for gaming, surfing and more!

Gyration frees you from the confines of your desktop with a powerful 30? radio range and no line-of-sight limitations. And Gyration?s high-power radio transmits data at lightning fast speeds. You?ll feel the benefits of smoother tracking, more precise cursor movement and ultra fast response."

Includes charging cradle for mouse. Takes a little getting used to, but sure nice to have the freedom of movement. The reviews I've read have all been pretty positive. I'm liking it myself. Give Microsoft a run for it's money!
