I have a NEC pc with an AMD 500 cpu with winxp Pro installed and a new Sony pc with a 1.6g intel cpu, an 80 Hard drive with WinXP Home installed. I currently have the sony hooked up to cable internet. I,d like some advice on networking these two machines together so I could share the internet connection and possibly share my printer and scanner. If this is feasable I would remove the WinXP Pro OS from the old system and replace it with Win 98. Can any one give me some ideas?

I don't know about sharing a scanner, never heard of that, but others may.
The other parts aren't that hard to fix - w**.practicallynetworked.com

its been awhile since i shared my connection with xp (main) and winme (other). in xp i just clicked the box to share the internet connection, but i forgot what i did in winme. i think i created the 3 1/4" disk when i told it to me then stuck it in the winme machine and did what it told me to do.

i think you can right click on your printer and click share or something like that.

i don't know about the scanner.

pretty easy except the scanner, buy a router, i preferr linksys, cable the two computers to the router, fire up the computer w/th 98 me or 2000 on it, set up file sharing. then fire up xp set up home networking, through residential gateway, share the drives you want to share and the printer, think i left something out though.

Bigtubs: Yes you did...
"then fire up xp set up home networking" sounds very easy, then the router should be connected to the net somehow and perform the login and such. Security risks are to be considered too. And...

Agamemnon: There are several places with step-by-step instructions about how to fix ICS. Try one of them and then if you get into interesetening trouble get back here!

if you just wanted to share the internet connection (maybe more but not sure if ya can) you can have 2 nics in the main computer and 1 nic in the other computer with cat5 [b:51ac2dc247]crossover[/b:51ac2dc247] connecting the two.
