Lately, my computer has been running slow when starting applications. Explorer, Internet Explorer, and other applications, etc. suddenly seem to take 3 to 15 seconds longer to start up. I even tried installing the Windows XP sp2 fix but this did not help (worst slow than sp1). What is the problem? Has anyone else experienced a similar slowdown after installing Windows XP sp2?

Thanks

Remove this Microsoft Update 811493. It is a know MS bug, it causes the kernel to check too frequently and slows the OS down. Go to Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs. You will find it near the bottom with all the othe MS Updates. Remove it.

Would it be safer to just unstall SP2? I'm worried that unstall could mess up my XP.

If you try to install it via Add & Remove, a little window pops up and tells you what files/programs might be affected by doing so. Often , it is just a question of returning to windowsupdate and redownloading a different Hotfix.

Hey Dr. PC,

Microsoft finally fixed and reissued HotFix Q811493. The new one works without a problem...

I would say if you installed this HotFix before mid May, I would uninstall it and then go to WindowsUpdate and reinstall it...

Hey Vols;

When you do these "upgrades", just make sure you check the option to backup your existing files...
That way, if a service pack doesn't perform the way you'd like, you can just un-install it, and bring it back to the way it was...
