I have been trying for the past couple of days to enable DMA on my Yamaha CD-R/RW. The "Advanced Settings" tab doesn't show up on my WinXP Pro SP1 computer like it should according to all the directions on the net. Also, I've tried editing the registry using some instructions found on the net as well. Heck, maybe I just can't do it since when I try to change it in the BIOS, it keeps automatically resetting itself back.

Then again, does DMA only refer to UDMA66? If that's the case, then I guess I can't since the drive only supports UDMA33 but it's kinda of unsettling when Nero InfoTool says that it isn't enabled at all.

Any answers out there?

System Properties-->Device Manager-->hardware-->IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers........select the channel to wich your drive is connected and enable it....

That's my problem. The option to enable DMA doesn't show up in my device manager. I'm at a loss.

Any chance that your drive is connected to a PCI IDE card?Normally DMA option should be listed under the "advanced options " of your primary and secondary IDE channel properties tab
Check also your parallel port settings in your bios:should be set to "ECP+EPP" to prevent DMA problems with some setups...

P4 2.53GHz
1024MB Corsair XMS PC2700 DDR RAM
MSI GF4 Ti4200 128MB Graphics Card
120GB WD SE (Master on Primary)
Pioneer DVD 106S (Master on Secondary)
Yamaha CRW-F1 (Slave on Secondary)
Samsung Floppy
Audigy 2 Platinum
and a whole bunch o' mods


I am not using a PCI controller card (no RAID). The Pioneer drive says that DMA is activated (according to Nero) which makes sense since the Pioneer is UDMA66.

I think I found my own answer. According to the Intel Application Accelerator, all my drives ARE running in DMA mode and I got worked up about nothing. Just to make sure, I tried burning a disk at the max speed and it worked...so I guess no DMA problems here.

I guess I should trust Intel more than Nero on this matter. Thanks, roadworker, for giving me some suggestions to try. It was much appreciated.

PS:doesn't it mess up some of your burning tasks?

No problems burning so far. Course I don't use InCD or any of the other utilities. Everything seems to be in good working order and have burned several disks.
