THE LESS THAN LOVED RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America, has been working with the International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI) to develop a tracking system for music sold online. The Global Release Identifier, or GRid, is effectively an identification number for music. It seems like a good idea.
The system is designed to let online music resellers to name exactly which music has been sold. This will allow royalties to be paid to the right label, band or artist. A similar system exists for CDs that are sold at retail.

According to Reuters, the system is not an individual tracking system. It could not be used to keep track of files shared over P2P networks, each track by an artist is given a number rather than each file.
