RANDOM CRASHES AND SAFE or reliable but vulnerable, the choice was yours if you were running Windows NT4 up until a few hours ago. Microsoft has just withdrawn a patch for the ageing but widespread operating system after users discovered the fix caused more trouble than it was worth.

The patch was designed to kill a security vulnerability on Windows NT4, 2000 and XP. It was possible for a malicious user to gain privileges on a machine they had logged into by using inter-process communications, in particular WM_TIMER. However, the patch proved to be a dangerous thing to install on NT4.

Three days ago I installed an an automatic update for Win 2K Pro (SP3) that proved to really mess things up for me. The supposed security "Pre SP4 Hotfix" caused my system to run an instance of svchost.exe (NOT scvhost.exe - the virus) that continuoually used 95% - 99% of my cpu power and increasingly ate up my avalable memory until the system would crash. I also lost the ability to print or even add a printer on account that my available system resources were so low. After uninstalling the hotfix, my system returned to the right state and all was well. Please be careful what you install from M$ as they have not always fixed a problem but caused a new one. If you are going to get Win 2K fixes, be wary and have a restore point!

I will stick with simple SP3...until SP4 comes out officially...
