No. USB is Plug 'n Play in Linux.
Do you have the correct modules loaded to use the device? At the command prompt do "cat /proc/devices | grep usb". If anything is printed on the screen that means USB is working. Otherwise you will have to reconfigure the kernel. Go to
www.tldp.org and search there for help on how to configure the kernel sources.
