upgrading

im just about to upgrade my motherboard + P111 1gig. can i just plug my h/d on to that board & will the softwear config itself to the new m/board
im runing xp pro if that makes a difference or will i have to format & start again

You will need to use a thrid party tool like:

Powerquests DriveImage or Nortons Ghost or something, lol

that would make life too easy lol

to tell ya the truth , i just plugged my hard drive in and os and all programs worked.

i upgraded from a p433 to a 1.1 t-bird..

they said i need to reinstall, but i didn't..

go figure

if you do the upgrade just to be on the safe side bring it up in safe mode let it find the new resources slow, this has worked for me

The problem is that the two boards will require some different drivers from Windows. If when you first boot up Windows properly finds all the new hardware and installs those drivers and deletes all the unecessary ones you are ok. It usually won't delete all the ones it doesn't need and they may come back to haunt you later by causing instabilities. You may be able to get by the quick and dirty way, but for best results, I'd do a clean install.

whenever you change a Motherboard, you should ALWAYS reinstall.
There is always someone who has made this or that "work", but it is not right and will always give you trouble in the future.
The registry is a very complicated file, and when you change around alot of stuff that wasn't designed into the operating system to change normaly, it ruins this file, and leaves errors and omitions in it until you have a mess.
It doesn't take all that long to just reinstall after backing up all your needed files and settings, No more than 2 hours tops, to setup XP completely, even with updates etc.
Just do it right the first time and SAVE time and energy fighting a messed up system.
