how do i update my bios with xp

i have downloaded my new bios onto floppy and made it bootable when i get to a dos promt i try to type in the "flash802a.exe" but i get a bad command/file error i have tried all ways to get this to work but with no luck yet

Tha files are

flash802a.exe
aba46.bin

Is the floppy write protected? It may sound silly, but usually when you flash your bios, the program backs up your existing bios onto the same floppy first before it loads the updated one. If you are getting a bad command/filename error, that would sound like either the program does not exist, or you typed it in wrong. Be sure to be on the floppy drive when you run the program (a:\ for example), and not use quotes. Hope this helps a little.

and ensure you have the name right - a: then dir

and be carefull - make a backup of your old bios first. If you get a bad download of the flash your computer is D E A D.

your post reads right but it is just your comment about flashing the bios in xp.

i assume you are using the boot floppy to boot the machine and not opening a command prompt in XP.

has to be done from a boot floppy.

Hi,

Normally the command booting into DOS via floppy would be:

flash802a.exe aba46.bin

but don't do that just yet.

Is there a text file that came with the files, or maybe a .bat file? If so, open up the .txt or right-click on the .bat and choose EDIT to see what additional parameters are allowed to enable you to save your current BIOS just incase.

Flashing any BIOS is dangerous as it can provide you with a dud device if it goes wrong.

Provide details of what you are tring flash and I'll research a little, OK.

you may need to consider this too, although you don't say what MB you are using, you may need to enable bios flashing in the bios. alot of motherboards now have an antiflash setting in the bios.
It makes a difference on award, ami, bios different bios flash different way..
what I do when I need to flash the bios is pretty simple, I just use the win98 boot disk and pick number 3, takes you straight to the dos prompt..

Iwas trying to figure out a way to flash my laptop bios which doesn't have a floppy drive but I gave up. I thought I would probably end up messing it up

thanks for the replies i downloaded the bios update again there are a few info txt files then the 2 update files. i did boot up with a 98 bootdisk but i put the bios files on the disk as well i will try and boot up with the 98 disk and put the bios update on a seperate disk but when i did get to the A: promt i typed flash802a.exe aba46.bin and had bad command so now i will check in the bios to see if there are any signs that have to be disabled so i can update My M/B is a 1St Mainboard model AD11

Hi,

I've created a CD Self-Booting ISO, just burn to CD using your favourite .ISO burning program.

What it will do assuming your CD supports Self-Booting, will boot you to DOS and the CD will assume A:\. (I'm just wondering though if your Laptop has provision for a A:\ floppy in the Bios, if so, this will need to be enabled, I think)

You will need to create on your Hard-Drive a diretory called say C:\BiosUP and place all of your bios files, including the Flash program and .bin file, maybe even a .bat file if exists, then:

1. Re-Boot laptop and press the Delete key when Bios is doing memory check and find the setting to enable booting from CD, it maybe enabled as you don't have a floppy.

2. Type C:\ enter

3. Type cd\BiosUP enter

4. Type whatever the command is to launch your bios update program enter

Warning: Flashing the Bios of any device is risky and you take that risk, not me ;^)
