A few months ago a 1000W power supply seemed to be an overkill. However, nowadays, if you are building a top of the line high performance rig, a 1000W power supply is a necessity. With current high end video cards and processors on top of a number of hard drives, optical drives, sound and other cards, watercooling, etc., etc. you can end up pretty close to 1000W. What about folks that use 12-24 hard drives, RAID controllers, tons of RAM, server type motherboards with Dual or Quad multicore processors? That's where 1200W and 1300W power supplies come into play.
