Judge approves $1.53 billion jury verdict against M$
Media Player infringed Lucent patents
A FEDERAL JUDGE signed off on a $1.53 billion jury verdict against software giant Microsoft yesterday.
The damages were awarded by a jury in February but had to be placed alongside a judgement by US District Court Judge Rudi M. Brewster.
The Vole disputed that Alcatel-Lucent's patents govern its MP3 encoding and decoding tools, and said it licenses the MP3 software used by its Windows Media Player from Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a German company.
A spokesVole said that it would challenge the ruling now that the US Supreme Court has ruled in its favour in a similar patent lawsuit bought against it by AT&T.
