Is upgrading to vist worth it?

Hi! Everyone I was wondering if upgrading from Windows Media Center to Windows Vista Ultimate really worth it. I heard from a lot of friends that its the worst microsoft OS ever released and keeps crashing and that its also a big resources hog!! Is all of this true. What is the big hipe with vista? Is it more secure and more stable then xp?
