Samsung floods the market with 900MHz GDDR-3
SAMSUNG HAS begun mass production of its fastest GDDR-3 modules, rated to work at a sky rocket speed of 900 MHz. Usual spinola included quotes from both ATi and nVIDIA reps, pounding themselves with highest industry rate of performance increase and thanking Samsung for making screamin' fast modules.
The 900MHz GDDR-3 chips will be a standard with all upcoming high-end and upper mainstream parts, especially new Nvidia's mainstream and ATI's refresh lineups. On high-end parts, GDDR-4 is getting ready for prime time, but you can expect these 900MHz modules on the new boards, clocked even higher than 900MHz in some cases. It's no secret that with small PCB modifications even "old" 1.26ns modules used on X1800XT reached 1GHz DDR (2GHz) clock. Mass production will lower the prices of these modules, so it is not out of option to see highest-performing mainstream models based on "7600GT" and X1700XT using exactly this memory, just like we saw rise of 1GHz GDDR-3 modules with GeForce 6600GT, over a year ago... could you imagine a 200 dollar/euro graphics card that has 28.8 GB/s of memory bandwidth with 128-bit memory interface alone?
