HP to supply Integrity servers for 911 revamp
Hewlett-Packard will supply its Integrity servers to network services provider Intrado, which is upgrading the 911 emergency dialing service in the U.S., the companies said in a statement on Wednesday.

Intrado is developing a system called the Intelligent Emergency Network, which will offer new applications for the emergency calling service, the company said.

The upgrade will allow the 911 service to handle new technologies such as VoIP, which is being used with greater frequency to make phone calls, according to the company.

The new system will also allow a person dialing 911 to upload digital pictures, from a cell phone, for example, of a scene or a person to law enforcement and other responding agencies, according to Intrado.

Integrity servers are based on Intel's Itanium 2 processors and run HP-UX, a version of the Unix operating system.

The 911 infrastructure currently uses HP's NonStop and HP 9000 servers and HP's OpenCall carrier network software, according to the companies.
