Do Not Contact Service
PLEASE NOTE: The Canadian Marketing Association does not own, compile, prepare or rent lists of consumers' names and addresses. CMA is a private trade association funded by its members. We offer the Do Not Contact Service free of charge to consumers. If you wish to have your name removed from new contact lists acquired by our members, please follow the registration instructions.
The Do Not Contact Service enables individuals to reduce the number of marketing offers they receive by mail and telephone. Consumers register to have their names removed from marketing lists held by members of the Canadian Marketing Association. CMA members, who account for about 80 percent of direct response sales in Canada, want to present offers only to those consumers interested in their products and services and are happy to comply with requests for name removal.
Although the CMA does not have or maintain marketing lists, four times a year the names of individuals who have registered for the Do Not Contact Service are distributed to Association members, who are obligated to delete these names from their new-contact marketing lists. Consumers who request removal of their names and addresses should see a reduction in addressed advertising mail and telephone solicitations within three months.
This service has proven to be very effective in limiting the volume of offers by telephone and addressed advertising mail. It will not, however, stop delivery of flyers and other unaddressed advertising mail, which is mainly designed to build retail traffic.
Do Not Contact Service > FAQ Q. Who sponsors the Do Not Contact Service?
A. The Do Not Contact Service is a free consumer service sponsored by the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA). Members of the CMA market goods and services directly to consumers using such media as direct mail, catalogues, telemarketing, magazine and newspaper ads and broadcast direct response advertising.
Q. What happens after consumers register?
A. The name, address, postal code and phone numbers of persons who register for the Do Not Contact Service are distributed quarterly to Association members and other business subscribers who must delete them from their mailing and phone lists. Names are maintained on the services for three years.
Registrants typically notice a significant decrease in addressed advertising mail volume and phone calls approximately three months after their names are registered with the service.
Q. What happens when the Do Not Contact Service registrant moves to a new address?
A. Consumers should write again to the CMA to register the new address and phone number.
Q. Can consumers request deletion from specific lists through the Do Not Contact Service?
A. No. Address and telephone number removal through the Do Not Contact Service is comprehensive in nature. Consumers may reduce the number of mail pieces or marketing calls they receive from a specific company by writing directly to the company to request address and telephone number removal or by requesting number removal at the time a telemarketing call is received.
Q. Can consumers who like to shop by mail limit their mail volume?
A. Yes, consumers should inform their favourite mail order company that they wish to be kept only on an "in-house" list. As a result, they will continue to receive the desired mailings, but their names will not be released to other direct marketers. The CMA Privacy Code entitles consumers to stop the transfer of their names to any other direct marketer.
Q. Will registration with the Do Not Contact Service end all advertising mail and telemarketing calls?
A. No, only the mail and phone calls from CMA members. Registrants may continue to receive mail and phone solicitations from many sources including local merchants, professional and alumni associations, political candidates and office holders, as well as mail of a business-to-business nature. In those instances, the consumer is advised to write directly to the mailer or caller to request name removal.
Q. How does CMA ensure that its members honour a consumer's request not to receive addressed advertising mail or telemarketing calls?
A. All CMA members must comply with the Do Not Contact Service. If a consumer is still receiving mail pieces or phone calls from a CMA member company more than three months after registering for the service, the Association will contact the company on the consumer's behalf
Enjoy!!
